After two years looking for it, I have found Glenn Gould’s recording that I first heard in this scene from George Roy Hill’s Slaughterhouse-Five (1972), originally a book by Kurt Vonnegut.

I am satisfied for the moment, happy new year!
Toward the end of his life P.D.Q became very frugal; this attempt to write an entire piano sonata on one page of manuscript paper has yet to be deciphered.
Somebody get the DNA sequencing specialists with their rulers.

Reposting because I hadn’t yet seen him playing it, Matt Herskowitz does Bach à la Jazz from the soundtrack to Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003), based on Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No. 2 in C minor from the Well Tempered Clavier.
I better get my hair cut this week, I love it when it’s short.
Benny’s Video (1992), directed by Michael Haneke.
This is a young Arno Frisch, five years before Funny Games.
Trotz, trotz dem alten Drachen | Defy, defy the old Dragon,
dem alten Drachen, | the old Dragon,
Trotz, trotz des Todes Rachen | Defy, defy the jaws of death
Trotz der Furcht darzu! | Defy the fear of it!
Richard Galliano plays an accordina.
How much are these?
Alexei’s Vater returns home, in this short scene from Andrei Tarkovsky’s The Mirror (Зеркало, 1975).
Notice how he took advantage of Margarita Terekhova’s resemblance to Ginevra de’ Benci, painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
And how suddenly, a short section of Johannes-Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach (listen here).
Und siehe da, der Vorhang im Tempel zerriß in zwei Stück von oben an bis unten aus. Und die Erde erbebete, und die Felsen zerrissen, und die Gräber täten sich auf, und stunden auf viel Leiber der Heiligen.
And lo, behold: the curtain of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. And the earth was filled with quaking, and the cliffs split asunder, and the graves themselves opened up, and there rose up the bodies of many saints.
This one is just ridden with these things. See that Red Army pin on his uniform? Somehow, the universe has conspired to grant me possession of a few similar ones, it’s a funny story actually, I collect old stuff.
The aftermath of the Dresden Firebombings, as seen by George Roy Hill in Slaughterhouse-Five (1972), from Kurt Vonnegut’s The Children’s Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death, himself a survivor of the bombing as a POW.
Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 Variation No. 25 by Johann Sebastian Bach, a Saxon himself. Recorded by Glenn Gould for his 1955 debut album.
Listen here to variations 25-29.
The boy says, you’ve been stupid pigs.

Prelude & Fugue No.2 in c-moll
Sviatoslav RichterThis is a matter of opinion, but i think richter’s interpretation is perfection.

This got me an idea.

Little Organ Fugue by the modern members of the vocal group The Swingle Singers, founded in 1962 in Paris, a voice arrangement of Bach’s (organ) Fugue in G Minor “Little” BWV 578, featured on the soundtrack of Jason Reitman’s Thank You for Smoking (2005).
Anthony Burgess on pop music (and basically everything else).
Jacques Loussier - Toccata And Fugue in D Minor
In times of need, I ask myself, what would Bach do?
Trotz dem alten Drachen, 5th movement from J. S. Bach’s Motet No. 3 in E minor, BWV 227 - Jesu, meine Freude.
Trotz, trotz dem alten Drachen
dem alten Drachen,
Trotz, trotz des Todes Rachen
Trotz der Furcht darzu!
Tobe, tobe, tobe Welt,
und springe;
Ich steh hier und singe
in gar sich’rer Ruh!
Gottes Macht hält mir
in acht;
Erd und Abgrund,
Erd und Abgrund
muss verstummen,
Ob sie noch so brummen
You may have heard this in Michael Haneke’s Benny’s Video (1992).
Incredible film.
Defy, defy the old Dragon,
the old Dragon,
Defy, defy the jaws of death
Defy the fear of it!
Rage, rage, rage, world,
and break;
I stand here and sing
in absolutely certain peace!
The power of God holds me
in its attention;
Earth and the Abyss
Earth and the Abyss
must be struck dumb,
even would they snarl.
